best bed: Hotel FRANQ, Antwerp, Belgium

the stunning lobby of the Hotel FRANQAntwerp is a remarkable has-it-all city… the perfect mix of historic architecture, modern design and foodie destination. So is the Hotel FRANQ, a Relais & Chateaux gem in the heart of the city . Once a bank, the hotel has retained many details of the historic neoclassical building. Completely renovated for the opening in 2017, it perfectly blends historic charm and urban chic. Room décor is minimalist. Yet they come with everything you need. The original bank vault is now a wine cellar. The bank lobby is still, well, the lobby. And gorgeous!! You check in at old office tables. Sounds cutsie, but not at all. It is great clever design throughout. As for food… a total WOW!!! The restaurant has one Michelin star. I wouldn’t be surprised if another is in their near future.  My dinner was incredible!  My notes on the whiting dish give an indication of what to expect…” delicate soft flavored fish accompanied with fresh pea puree, a pinch of wasabi doesn’t add any spice but keeps the peas from becoming bland, slivers of pickled onion add a perfect touch of strong flavor to the dish”.   Yum.

Number of Rooms: 39

Sweet Suite: The beautiful hideaway in the private 17thcentury house tucked into the back of the garden. It is closed for a complete renovation but is sure to be more magical than ever when its once again available in September 2019

Favorite Thing: the huge breakfasts…pastries, breads, eggs, cold cuts, fruits… all served directly to your table. So nice not to have to walk to a buffet!

Near By: pretty much everything. Antwerp is very accessible and super biking friendly the Grand Place is less than a five minute walk as are the Cathedral of Our Lady, the Saint Charles Borromeus Church (look for Ruben’s Return of the Holy Family which was returned to the Church in 2017 after 240 years) and my favorite glove shop in the world, Gantarie Boon.

Amenities: Michelin starred restaurant, White Company products, bar, gym, restaurant room service, Nespresso coffee maker, Marshall speaker, outdoor terrace, bike rentals

  1. I was sold when you told me that your dinner at the hotel was a soft fish. I don’t eat much meat but when a hotel can properly cook fish, I’m usually in love at that moment!….also amazed at the fact that the hotel turned the vault into a wine cellar, that is exquisite!
