best bed: Magashi Camp, Akagera, Rwanda

sunset at MagashiThis is your bucket list safari experience on steroids. Three and half hours east of Kigali, Wilderness Safari’s Magashi Camp sits on a 6500-hectare private concession with in the Akagara National Park. It is one of the most private places in the world to see the big five. While you will see lions, black rhinos, buffalo, and elephants, you are unlikely to see any other tourists. The open green jeeps seat a maximum of six, so you always have a window seat even if you are part of a group. The camp is gorgeous, the food yummy, the cocktails divine. A beautiful large old Albiza tree grows in the center of the main lodge. The décor and architecture are inspired by traditional Rwandan style yet are modernly comfortable. But let’s face it, nice as these things are, you are here to see animals! And see them you will. I only had 48 short hours (you really want a minimum of 3 nights) but saw the big five including leopards two nights in a row. The Park has amongst the highest density of hippos in Africa. They seem to be everywhere. I also saw giraffe, zebra, eland, topi, crocodiles and hundreds of birds. There are more than 520 species. The guides are incredibly knowledgeable. Well trained and talented, they are genius at finding animals. And they know everything there is to know about them. Every single one of my million questions was answered.

Every minute was magic!

Number of Rooms: 6 Glamping Tents

Sweet Suite: All 6 tents are the same…each luxurious and private with a deck overlooking the water, a king-sized bed tucked behind mosquito netting and a bathroom with a huge solar power shower. They each have a mini bar with coffee maker & cookie jar and a yoga mat, resistance band and jump rope in case you want to exercise. Each night a hot water bottle is tucked under the covers and a gift is left above.

Favorite Thing: The Olympus camera, complete with a variety of lenses, that you can borrow! The Camp has a partnership with Olympus who provides state of the art cameras for guests to use. What a thrill not having to lug heavy camera equipment with you and still get great photos! At the end of your stay you just take the memory card and all your pictures! TA DA! The best souvenir ever!
