Rome: 6 things to do

Ah Rome… the Eternal City, The City of God, Love & Seven Hills. Where all roads lead. And the home of La Dolce Vita. Where the rights of cats are enshrined in law, flamingo tongues were once a delicacy; there are more Egyptian obelisks than in Egypt. 3000 euros are taken out of the Trevi Fountain daily (the money is donated to the Caritas charity to help feed the poor & homeless). Visit a museum dedicated to pasta. Be eco-friendly… fill your bottle at one of over 2000 fountains that spew safe cool drinking water. While it is acceptable to drink espresso all day long, no self-respecting Roman will order a cappuccino after 11 am…it’s a breakfast drink. There are so many ways to enjoy La Dolce Vita… strolling la Via Veneto like Anita Ekberg did in the movie is always an option, here are a few other suggestions.

Get away from the tourists and go shopping along Via del Boschetto for all things artisanal…home of fashion boutiques, unique home accessory shops, vintage stores and vinyl troves. It is where the real Romans go for distinctive style.

Take a private cooking class with In-Rome Cooking in their stunning 17^th century palazzo just around the corner from the Piazza Navona. Prosecco, giggles and actual learning! Enjoying ‘your’ meal in their dining room is icing on the fun cake! They also organize classes  & private tours at the Pope’s farm in his summer palace… worth every calorie.

There is nothing more ‘sweet life’ than clubbing with the beautiful people. Try  for the ultimate underground experience, Art Café  for exclusive international stars (book a VIP table to guarantee entrance), Goa Club for alternative electronic music & world-renowned sound system or the Toy Room for the fashionista crowd.  Romans take their nightlife seriously…dress to impress.

Stay the night at Villa Spalletti and finally live like a noble. This is the last Villino Urbino left in private hands. The family opened it as a 17-room gem hotel in 2006, they still live nearby. Drive around Rome. Mad perhaps, but the best way to see all the bits and pieces of history that don’t make the guide books (And all the things that do). Italy with Class offers bespoke golf buggy tours (my favorite) with incredible guides. Or rent a Vespa or a classic Fiat 500 and brave Rome’s crazy traffic. Better yet, choose the guided option and just be a passenger (the photo opportunities will be much greater).

Choose one, or more, of the 20,000 bottles of wine stored in the 4^th century catacombs beneath Restaurant Antico Arco. The classic yet creative Roman food is loved by locals and receives endless kudos from the international press. Reservations a must, be prepared to take your time and enjoy. This is not a quick bite place.
