Belmond took over in 2010, giving the old dame a careful facelift — polishing the tiles, refreshing the colonnades, and adding just enough modern luxury without losing her vintage soul. And the setting? Outrageous. The hotel sits directly beside Iguaçu Falls, a thundering wall of water made up of 275 individual cascades spanning nearly 3km between Brazil and Argentina. Sweet Suite: If you’re going big, go Cataratas Suite with Falls View. It’s the showstopper. Four balconies (yes, four) looking directly onto the mighty Iguaçu Falls. A dining room for entertaining — though let’s be honest, you’re ordering room service and staying in your robe. Hand-painted Portuguese tiles, glossy dark wood floors, and a bed that could swallow you whole in the best possible way. Bathrooms are marble, spacious, and come with Belmond’s signature Granado toiletries. The suite has that rare quality: it makes you feel both at home and wildly important.

Favourite Thing: Easy. Having the falls to yourself. Strolling along the misty trails at sunrise or sunset with no one else around is pure magic. It’s spiritual, cinematic, and just a little smug-inducing.

Close second: the pool. A glamorous rectangle of turquoise, lined with palms, waiters who bring fruit skewers unprompted, and enough SPF to protect an army.

Nearby: “Nearby” is a relative term. The nearest town is a taxi ride away, but you won’t be leaving. Instead, your neighbours are toucans, coatis, and the occasional monkey. The hotel arranges boat rides into the spray, helicopter tours, bird-watching, and moonlit waterfall walks. Basically: the jungle is your playground.
