best bed: Movenpick Petra Resort, Wadi Musa, Jordan

petra by nightLocation, location, location. The Movenpick is only steps from the entrance to Petra. Why should you care? Well, the site is huge, a bit overwhelming and there is a lot to see. I loved being able to go back several times. Easily. No waiting for cabs, no worrying about it getting dark and being able to roll out of bed minutes before the site opens to avoid the inevitable crowds. The lobby is lovely, with classic riad décor. Sadly the décor doesn’t spill into any of the rooms except for the Royal Suite. Instead they are quite basic. Not luxurious, but with everything you need. The roof top restaurant (open in the summer) has a wonderful prix fix barbeque. The meal is huge and the food tasted better than it looked. The pool is a great break from the mid-day heat. Ask them to help you get a guide… not the cheapest option but they made sure our guide was knowledgeable and had great English. Rumor has it the rooms will be renovated by the end of 2019.

Number of Rooms: 184

Sweet Suite: By far the grandest accommodation in Petra, the Royal Suite is decorated with dark woods and lush fabrics that evoke the local Bedouin style. It has a kitchenette, powder room, separate shower and bath, hexagonal living room and terrace which overlooks the mountains and the entrance to the park.

Favorite Thing: well, apart from the location, which is outstanding…the lobby. It is lovely. And given the hustle and bustle of people coming and going, a surprisingly peaceful to sit!

Nearby: Petra is, unsurprisingly, the biggie. But it is an easy walk to lots of little restaurants and shops and the hotel can arrange day trips to other parts of Jordan including the Dead Sea.

Amenities: 7 restaurants, pool, free Wi-Fi, fitness room, free mini bar (non-alcoholic), free valet parking, tea/coffee maker in rooms, steam room
