Opened in 1864, Hôtel de Paris was built with a clear purpose: to accommodate the wealthy guests drawn to the newly established Casino de Monte-Carlo across the square. From the outset, the hotel was conceived as part of the casino ecosystem, a place designed for high rollers, royalty, and society figures who expected discretion, scale, and spectacle in equal measure.
The Belle Époque façade remains one of the most recognizable in Europe, and many original architectural elements still define the building today. Marble floors, ornate moldings, grand staircases, and the historic glass dome anchor the interiors, even after result feels refined rather than theatrical… unmistakably grand but controlled.
Hôtel de Paris has long been woven into popular culture. Scenes from Never Say Never Again and GoldenEyewere filmed here, cementing its association with cinematic glamour. Beneath the hotel lies one of its most extraordinary assets: founded in 1874, it is considered the largest hotel wine cellar in the world, with an estimated 350,000 bottles stored in underground galleries carved into the rock below Monte Carlo.
Rooms are formal and well-proportioned, with high ceilings, excellent soundproofing, and layouts that reflect the building’s original grandeur rather than modern minimalism. Beds are dressed simply and deliberately, prioritizing structure and sleep over trend-driven softness. Bathrooms are finished in marble, a detail that feels appropriately classic for a hotel of this pedigree.
Number of Rooms: 206
Sweet Suite: The Princess Grace Suite is the hotel’s most storied accommodation. Named for Grace Kelly, it spans two floors and includes expansive terraces overlooking the Mediterranean, a private swimming pool, and interiors designed to feel residential rather than showy. Most wonderfully, it houses personal mementos that once belonged to Princess Grace including many of her books. It is less about spectacle than privacy, space, and provenance, very much in keeping with the hotel’s original purpose.
Favorite Thing: The Wellness Sky Club at Thermes Marins Monte-Carlo. Located above the harbor, the rooftop space includes a seawater pool, panoramic sun decks, and direct access to one of Europe’s most respected medical and wellness centers. It’s a rare combination of Riviera views and serious wellness infrastructure — and a compelling reason to leave the room at all.
Nearby: The Casino de Monte-Carlo sits directly opposite, with the Opera House next door and the Carré d’Or shopping district surrounding the square. Port Hercule is a short walk downhill, and Monaco-Ville is easily reached by taxi.
Amenities: Direct access to the Thermes Marins Monte-Carlo spa and wellness complex, the historic wine cellar (1874), and an exceptional dining lineup including Le Louis XV – Alain Ducasse, Le Grill, Em Sherif Monte-Carlo, Bar Américain, and Le Bar de l’Hôtel de Paris.
