best bed: Fairmont Waterfront, Vancouver, Canada

Awesome location…tick; gobsmacking views from floor to ceiling windows…tick; incredibly helpful kind staff…tick. What’s not to love! As the name suggests, the Fairmont Waterfront is right on Vancouver’s renowned waterfront strip. I was shocked to learn the hotel opened way back in 1991…due to constant and thoughtful renovations it feels brand new. The rooms are classically designed, very large with fabulous beds. I couldn’t move out the comfy lounge chair from which I worked for hours. Though the desk might have made more sense. It comes with a connectivity hub that allows you to link your laptop to the tv.  I’m a tub girl but found the walk-in shower heavenly. It had great pressure, not something I usually consider but the hotel is committed to sustainability which I worried might come at the expense of comfort. It did not in any way.  The Waterfront is larger than I usually like, spread over 23 floors. I opted for the Gold Floor with its exclusive check in and knowledgeable concierge. Feels much more intimate. Plus, you have access to snacks all day long. Big tip…leave your running shoes at home. They weigh a ton and are ugly. The Waterfront will lend you Reebok workout apparel and footwear!  Why don’t more hotels do this? Second tip…sample something made with Dungeness crab at Arc Restaurant. It is a Vancouver specialty. I had crabcakes, the daily special. They were divine! Last tip…whatever the season make sure to have a dip in the outdoor heated pool and hot tub…I splashed around on a rainy November day. The views were still magnificent.

Number of rooms: 489

Sweet Suite: The Stanley Park suite, cause let’s face it if it was good enough for Queen Elizabeth II its good enough for me…split over two levels it boats drop dead gorgeous views, a soaker tub and a large terrace with loungers. It comes with Gold Floor privileges which include access to another large terrace!

Favorite Thing: The commitment to sustainability that never compromises the guest experience. 250,000 bees live on the roof. They produce 600 pounds of really yummy honey each year.  The hotel uses it in cocktails and desserts. You can even buy a jar to take home. Isn’t it nice to do good by shopping! Nearby is the organic roof garden…2100 square feet which has been certified as a wildlife habitat. Excess food from the Restaurants is donated to the local community. The Waterfront was a founding member of Ocean Wise. All seafood is certified.

Nearby: Stanley Park, historic Gastown, Seawall Footpath, Robson Street shopping, Vancouver Art Gallery, Pacific Centre Mall

Amenities: bee tours in summer, complimentary luggage transfer to the Cruise Terminal, Nespresso coffee machines in every room, heath club w jacuzzi & sauna, gym, year-round heated outdoor pool & hot tub, Arc Restaurant, room service, complementary bicycles for guests to use, pet friendly, very kid friendly.
