The Travel Mistakes We All Make (And How to Avoid Them)

never stop traveling

Even the most well-travelled among us have made a few questionable decisions along the way. I’ve stayed in more hotels than I can count, crossed more borders than I remember, and yet I still learn something new on almost every trip. Travel has a way of keeping us humble.

Here are a few common travel mistakes I see — and occasionally still make — along with some gentle course corrections.

Not Checking Passport Expiration

Many countries require your passport to be valid for at least six months beyond your return date. It’s an easy detail to overlook — and an expensive one if you’re denied boarding at the airport. A quick check before you book can save a lot of stress later.

Trying to Do Too Much

It’s tempting to cram every landmark, museum, and “must-see” into a single itinerary. But over-planning often leads to exhaustion rather than enjoyment. Travel should feel like a pleasure, not a checklist.

A slower pace allows time for long lunches, quiet walks, and the occasional afternoon off. Those moments often become the memories we treasure most.

my luggage...I can go 6 weeks with just this...Choosing the Wrong Location

A beautiful hotel in the wrong neighbourhood can quickly lose its charm. Being “only 20 minutes from the city centre” usually means much longer when you’re tired and hungry.

Staying somewhere walkable, with cafés and attractions nearby, can completely change how relaxed a trip feels.

Forgetting About Time Zones & the 24-Hour Clock

Booking flights across time zones can be surprisingly tricky. Add in the 24-hour clock and it’s easy to misread departure times, arrival dates, or connection windows.

Double-checking schedules — especially for overnight flights — helps avoid frantic airport dashes and missed connections.

don't over pack...Not Backing Up Important Documents

Passports, visas, travel insurance, and itineraries should always have digital copies stored somewhere safe. If something is lost or stolen, having backups can make a stressful situation far easier to manage.

Packing for Every Possible Scenario

We’ve all packed the “just in case” shoes and the jacket for weather that never arrives. Most of us wear the same few favourite pieces on repeat.

Packing lighter makes travel easier — especially when navigating trains, transfers, and hotel rooms.

Checking Luggage When You Don’t Have To

Whenever possible, carry-on only is a gift to yourself. No waiting at baggage carousels, no lost luggage anxiety, and far more flexibility if plans change. It also makes airport connections and spontaneous detours much easier.

Leaving Everything to the Last Minute

Great hotels, knowledgeable guides, and sought-after experiences book up early — especially in popular destinations. Planning ahead gives you better options and a far calmer start to your trip.

Travel doesn’t need to be perfect to be wonderful. A few missteps often become part of the story. But with thoughtful planning, the right locations, and a pace that suits you, most mistakes can be easily avoided.
