If luxury hotels had final exams, Forbes Travel Guide would be the impeccably dressed inspector quietly taking notes in the corner while everyone else nervously polishes the silverware one more time.
For more than six decades, Forbes Travel Guide has been the hospitality industry’s gold standard for luxury ratings. A Forbes Five-Star designation is one of the most coveted awards a hotel, restaurant, or spa can receive. Not because it can be bought, marketed, or influenced, but because it has to be earned through one of the world’s most rigorous anonymous inspection systems.
The story begins in 1958 with the launch of the Mobil Travel Guide, created by the Mobil Oil Company during America’s great road-trip boom. As the interstate highway system expanded and families took to the open road, travelers needed reliable recommendations for where to stay and dine without accidentally ending up somewhere featuring suspicious carpeting and overcooked pot roast. Mobil responded by publishing a guidebook that introduced the world’s first five-star rating system for hospitality.
The concept quickly transformed the industry. By the 1960s, hotels across the United States anxiously awaited their ratings each year. Five stars became the ultimate badge of hospitality excellence, proof that a property delivered not only luxury, but consistency, professionalism, and exceptional service.
In 2009, the Mobil system evolved into what we now know as Forbes Travel Guide. While the name changed, the standards only became more demanding. Today Forbes Travel Guide rates more than 2,000 luxury hotels, restaurants, and spas across roughly 90 countries, making it the only independent global rating system focused exclusively on luxury hospitality.
What separates Forbes from nearly every other rating platform is the inspection process itself. There are no public votes, no online popularity contests, and no influencer perks involved. Instead, Forbes sends highly trained inspectors to properties anonymously. They book under ordinary names, pay their own way, and experience the hotel exactly as a regular guest would. Staff members generally have no idea they are being evaluated. Which is precisely the point.
And evaluated they are.
Inspectors assess properties against up to 900 objective standards, making Forbes inspections among the most detailed in the hospitality world. A typical evaluation includes at least a two-night stay during which inspectors scrutinize nearly every aspect of the guest experience: check-in efficiency, room condition, dining quality, spa services, housekeeping precision, and countless tiny interactions most travelers barely notice.
The famous turndown service chocolate? Not enough on its own.
Forbes places a surprisingly heavy emphasis on service rather than décor. Roughly three-quarters of a property’s final score is tied to how guests are treated. Marble bathrooms and crystal chandeliers are lovely, but genuine luxury is ultimately about how a hotel makes you feel. Inspectors therefore pay close attention to warmth, anticipation of needs, attention to detail, professionalism, and whether service feels natural rather than scripted.
Did the concierge recommend something thoughtful and personal? Did staff remember preferences without being reminded? Did problems get solved gracefully and efficiently? These moments matter far more than whether the lobby flowers cost a small fortune.
This is also exactly why I trust Forbes Travel Guide more than almost any other source when researching hotels for my clients. Anonymous inspectors experiencing properties as real guests tend to reveal far more than glossy marketing photos ever will.
After the inspection, detailed reports are reviewed and scored internally before ratings are awarded. Properties may earn Five-Star, Four-Star, or Recommended status, with Five-Star reserved for hotels delivering an exceptional and nearly flawless experience. Only a relatively small percentage of properties achieve the top ranking, which is exactly why the distinction carries so much prestige.
Importantly, the process never really ends. Hotels are reassessed regularly, often without warning, ensuring standards remain consistently high year after year. In the luxury hospitality world, earning a Forbes Five-Star rating is difficult. Keeping it may be even harder.
More than 65 years after its creation, Forbes Travel Guide remains one of the most respected names in travel. Its anonymous inspections, meticulous standards, and relentless focus on service continue to shape the definition of modern luxury hospitality.
Because at the end of the day, true luxury is not just about thread counts and champagne menus. It is about making guests feel effortlessly cared for, while somewhere nearby, an anonymous inspector quietly takes notes.
