A little hotel with a big history and a perfect location in the heart of the 9th, Maison Albar Le Vendome is a wonderful place to stay. The building was constructed during the Revolution to house a drapier’s shop. Even then there were wealthy who wanted nice clothes. But its heyday came about 100 years later when architect Claude David renovated the townhouses into the Hotel d’Lyon with its famous Brasserie & cabaret… the hangout of the haut monde. The façade with the sign of the Lyon d’Or Brasserie is now a historic monument. The sign for the current hotel is discreetly to the side. For the 21-century visitor the interiors are sleek and contemporary. Designer Fabien Roque uses touches of gold, marble and velvet to pay homage to the past yet never cross the line to kitsch. The abstract lion in the lobby is a particular favorite of mine. Rooms are thoughtfully designed, generously sized, especially for Paris. I stayed in the smallest category yet never felt cramped. The bathrooms are spacious with double sinks & large walk-in showers, the marble table was perfect for working I the morning, room service in the evening. The bed was heaven. I adored my view over the street but loved the sound proofing even more. Yakuzu by Oliver serves divine cocktails and great Japanese food with a Mediterranean twist. A fresh squeezed orange juice in the courtyard is an afternoon must. The staff are extremely helpful and friendly, never in your face. They somehow managed to get me a taxi and to the train station in time on a very rainy, running late morning.
Number of Rooms: 51
Sweet Suite: The Opera Suite…because there is nothing like having your own terrace to make you feel truly Parisian… the views of the golden statues of the Opera Garnier are icing on a magnificent cake.
Favorite Thing: The pool… and the stunning mosaic staircase to get there (you can take an elevator, but you shouldn’t). Both are so unexpected. The staircase once led to the vaults of a bank on the premise…and while that might lead you to expect the spa and pool to be cramped, they are anything but. A pool this size in hotel this small is a rare treat. This pool also manages to be a perfect oasis escape from the hustle of Paris.
